School Readiness

Ages 4+

At Glenorie Preschool we believe that the early years provide a small window of opportunity in which to lay the basic foundation for the learning journey ahead before our children embark on the next stage of formal learning. Transition to school is much more than being academically ready. A child’s social and emotional development should be at the forefront of determining a readiness for school.

It is with this in mind, that our school readiness program is driven by a holistic approach that encompasses a broad range of valuable learning experiences across all developmental areas. The program involves intentional, spontaneous and child-led interactive learning opportunities based on the children’s needs and interests to equip our school learners with the necessary skills to be happy and confident, with a curiosity for learning.

PreLit 4+

Pre-lit is a skills based, early literacy preparation program for children in the year before school. It is designed to complement a play-based learning environment and provides an opportunity for early childhood educators to teach pre-literacy skills in a fun and engaging way.

Self help skills

Self care skills are the everyday tasks undertaken so children are ready to participate in life activities. Teaching a child to do simple self care tasks is a surefire path to supporting the development of healthy self-esteem. Some of the self-help skills that we encourage in preparation for school is putting on shoes, independent toileting and washing hands, opening and closing lunch containers and taking responsibility for own belongings.

Group Games

By participating in group games children learn from each other. They also learn to be part of a team, therefore developing important social skills. Team work promotes problem solving to achieve a common goal.

The EYLF (Early Years Learning Framework)

Supports a play-based learning approach to the curriculum and it is through valuable and enjoyable play opportunities, that it is possible to help children to extend on their knowledge, skills and interests. The development of important social skills, a motivation to learn, an ability to take initiative and focus attention and a curiosity about the world are all a part of play.
